“Our Commitment to You”: A Letter from Our Director
This article first appeared in the Summer 2025 edition of Wild Works.
The ongoing attacks on our public lands and the public’s voice are unprecedented. Yet we’ve been here before. Powerful government and corporate interests have long sought to extract profit from the lands and waters across our country and worked to minimize the voices of those who hold these places dear.
Our commitment to you is that, as we have done before, we will meet these attempts to liquidate public lands and ecosystems with ferocity, expertise and dedication. Wilderness Workshop is built not just to create new wilderness and other public land protections – for which we will continue to advocate – but also to keep in place the protections we have already secured. In this issue of Wild Works you will read about how we are meeting the moment, from working with our amazing community of activists and supporters to the highly impactful work of our dedicated and expert staff.
And there are already tangible examples of this people-power in action. The Gunnison Outdoor Resources Protection (GORP) Act, which would protect over 700,000 acres of public lands, was just reintroduced with bipartisan support in both the Senate and House. Hard-won protections for the Camp Hale-Continental Divide National Monument and Thompson Divide remain intact. Opposition to the sale of public lands is fierce and effective. While it would be pollyannaish not to acknowledge the likely damage and impact from those in power seeking to profit off public lands, we must not forget the reasons to be hopeful: the power of the grassroots and the passion we all hold for our wild places and wildlife.
