NORTH FORK ALLIANCE
We are working hard to protect roadless areas in portions of the Thompson Divide over McClure Pass where oil and gas companies are hanging on to old leases that they haven’t actually developed. The companies are using the same old tactics: lumping the leases together and filing last-minute unit proposals and suspension requests. We’ve seen industry hoard leases in special places with these tactics before, and we’re ready for the fight. WW has appealed recent unit and suspension decisions issued by the local BLM office to higher-level decision makers in Denver. The leases at issue are in Thompson Divide roadless areas along Huntsmans Ridge and the headwaters of the North Fork watershed.
Our goal is to push BLM to reverse those decisions and allow the undeveloped leases to expire. The lands at issue are remarkable swaths of unroaded backcountry that provide important wildlife habitat, produce water for domestic and agricultural use, and support diverse forms of recreation and historic grazing operations. We continue to work with sister groups in the North Fork to keep public lands in that area protected and unspoiled.
“Our tools are better than we are, and grow faster than we do. They suffice to crack the atom, to command the tides. But they do not suffice for the oldest task in human history: to live on a piece of land without spoiling it.”
