OIL & GAS DEFENSE
Inappropriate natural gas development threatens ecological values on Colorado’s western slope. Led by staff attorney Peter Hart, our Oil & Gas Defense Program’s goal is to prevent or minimize the adverse impacts of energy development on these lands. Wilderness Workshop often partners with other local, regional and national groups to push back against damaging energy development. We file comments, protests, appeals, and – if necessary – lawsuits, all to ensure that nature is given due consideration in the decision-making process. We mobilize our members and the public in support of our positions.
Our Program is most active on a few geographical “hot spots” in the region:
We also combat administrative assaults on healthy public lands through our policy advocacy. Examples include upholding the Obama-era BLM Methane Waste Rule, fighting back against attempts to weaken the National Environmental Policy Act and Freedom of Information Act, and preventing the transfer of oil and gas management to states, among others.
“If future generations are to remember us with gratitude rather than contempt, we must leave them something more than the miracles of technology. We must leave them a glimpse of the world as it was in the beginning, not just after we got through with it.”
President Lyndon B. Johnson
